International Workshop on Monitoring Chemical Pollution in Antarctica

Tackling future Challenges together

Siena (Italy), 3rd-4th October 2024

We are delighted to announce that International Workshop on Monitoring Chemical Pollution in Antarctica (IWMCPA 2024) will be held in Siena, Italy on October 3rd-4th 2024. The workshop is jointly organized by the University of Siena, the University of Genoa, the German Environment Agency, and Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon.
IWMCPA is a collaborative expert’s workshop focused on the pressing issue of monitoring chemical pollution in Antarctica, aiming to bring together experts from research, environmental specimen bank  and policymakers. The objective of this workshop is committed to integrating the knowledge of the current state of monitoring Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and Chemicals of Emerging Concern (CEC) in Antarctica, understand their impacts on both the environment and wildlife, and develop comprehensive strategies for mitigation and prevention. The workshop also wishes to bring together scientists involved in the SCAR ImPACT group and POLEMP project.
The workshop is envisioned to be a two-day event, featuring expert presentations, roundtable discussions, and working groups. Day one will focus on presenting recent research findings, case studies, and the identification of pollution sources. Day two will be dedicated to brainstorming practical solutions, policy recommendations, and future research directions.
This initiative offers a unique opportunity for cross-disciplinary collaboration and innovation. By pooling our knowledge and resources, we can create a roadmap for protecting the Antarctic ecosystems.

Scientific themes

  • Antarctic environmental monitoring program
  • Environmental fate and transport of POPs and CECs in Antarctica
  • Advanced sampling and analytical technologies for exploring POPs and CECs in Antarctica
  • Antarctic Environmental Specimen Banks
  • Brainstorm for future perspectives

The IWMCPA 2024 invites scientists and experts from the global Antarctic environmental science community. This event aims to be a hub for exchanging knowledge, fostering connections, and strengthening collaborative efforts in Antarctic research and exploration.

We look forward to seeing you all in Siena!
